The stretcher is covered with gunny which has not been ground-coated. I moisten it with watered-down acrylic medium (or rather water with a touch medium), so that it tightens. Gunny will not tighten automatically like cotton fabric. This how I build the base for a first conception of light.

Where, how big shall the Gestalt get/be? Where will the daffodil be positioned, a very important point of view in this picture? In this first and important phase I am working spontaneously and intuitevely, without using fotographs for reference

I try slightly different versions of the arrangement in space, working with thin layers of wash. Test the idea of several yellow spots, (flowers) and more yellow in the area of the chest. As long as the picture is staying wet, the gunny fabric is staying stressed.
Ich schiebe ein bißchen an meiner Vorstellung vom Bildraum herum, verdichte mit dünnen Schichten lasierender Farbe. Erprobe die Idee von mehreren gelben Flecken (Blüten) und mehr Gelb im Weiß, von Gelb im Brustraum Solange das Bild nass ist, bleibt der Rupfen straff

Next morning the gunny is slacking. So first I get it washed with broad brush and pure water. Then I fix some details of the figure with charcoal, reduce the dark area of the gestalt, which I like to think of as seen against the light. I take the additional flowers away again, they are only watering the main Idea of the picture to develop. Only now I start to use fotographs
Am nächsten Morgen ist der Rupfen schlaff. Er bekommt erst mal eine Runde Wasser mit dem breiten Pinsel. Dann lege ich mit Kohle Einzelheiten der Gestalt fest, Reduziere teilweise mit Weiss die dunkle Fläche der Gestalt, die im Gegenlicht gedacht ist. Nehme die zusätzlichen Blüten wieder weg, da sie nur die eigentliche Bildidee verwässern. Erst jetzt verwende ich Fotos als Referenz

I enjoy to be actually painting against the light - the fabric is still extremely transparent. It is sucking a lot of colour.

With thin washes of titan white I am condensing the space of light in the picture, letting the light move around the face, beeing rflected from the levers on the oven. The space of light behind the dark figure seems now being to broad - i rather want a small vibrating crack. Therefore I enlarge the dark area at the right side. Vaguely paint some items in the left corner.
